Born in the Amazon region, in Pará, more specifically in the city of Belém, where he graduated medical school at UFPA in 1955. There he received the “Raul Leite” award, only granted to those exceptional students who were the best throughout the course. After that he was a university teacher, doctor for the Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará, authority at INSS, and a private doctor.

Rego was raised in a family environment where good music was appreciated, shows were watched, and there were books and paintings inherited from family, along with individuals such as journalists, writers, poets, and artists always present; all of those still emerging from the majestic era that surrounded the Amazon. This era happened while they discovered rubber, which contributed to the improvement of the region, transforming it into a European cultural landmark at the time, although always keeping the Amazon feel.

He was soon interested in painting and learned to draw with the help of relatives, Mariz Filho and Ângelus, local painters. During his teenage years he learned techniques to use with watercolor, nankeen, etc…

 

Despite his artistic training has been shaped by the ideals of classical beauty, Greek and Latin, has always felt attracted by the culture of the Amazon, who so loved. Their cultural background, consists of renowned paintings that express the various stages that make up his artistic career. There are many macaws, toucans, herons, mothers d'waters, rivers and forests of the Amazon. He walked by the imagery of folklore with emphasis on nature, depicted in several paintings with figures of oxen-bumba, dolphins, giant snake, Matinta perera, all elementary mystical art of the Amazon ..

He was often called “Painter of Legends and Myths of the Amazon” by local media of his time, when in 1987 held an individual display of his work, named “Amazon Symphony”, along with “Rego Painter of Legends” – this one held in São Bernardo do Campo/SP/1988 -, were a few of his innumerous displays.

His artistic collection is made up of Series, such as “Mangue”, “Mitos Paraenses”, and “Javindia”; his works can be found in different Art Museums in Brazil. He was always innovative, studious, and controversial, and held the very first individual display of Abstract Art of Belém/Pará in 1959.

Rego was also a writer and art critic of local newspapers “O Estado do Pará”, “A Província do Pará”, and “Folha do Norte”. He was a poet, made films in super 8, designed book covers, pamphlets for theater plays, and came out with paintings in a sequence of three, to decorate halls.

Furthermore, he was the pioneer in including Contemporary and Conceptual Art of the northern region of the country, with paintings called “O Último Consumidor” and “Os Automatos”. In “The Power of Women” or “The Adventures of Miss Lugoff” (nylon string literature), the artist came out of exclusively a canvas into the world of installation. This was done in Belém of 1986, there granting him the title of pioneer of Arts in the Amazon region. Rego passed away in Belém/Pará on January 17, 1990.
